Become a Youth Mental Health First Aider. A two day workshop for anyone living with, supporting or working with young people aged 8-18.

As more young people are experiencing mental ill health it is essential that we provide an environment where it is safe to talk about mental health and to understand how early intervention can help with recovery. This course will give you the skills, confidence and knowledge to support a young person who may be experiencing mental health issues.

The course covers:

  • What is mental health?

  • Issues that young people face

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Suicide and psychosis

  • Self-harm and eating disorders

Research and evaluation shows that taking part in an MHFA course:

  • Raises awareness and mental health literacy

  • Reduces stigma around mental ill health

  • Boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues

  • Promotes early intervention which enables recovery

  • By the end of the course you will have:

  • A deeper understanding of young people’s mental health

  • Have developed skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues 

  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person

  • Enhanced listening skills

  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health

  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive

  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing

 

 

The Facilitator:

Angela McMillan is a British Association for counselling and psychotherapy accredited counsellor (Membership number 031233) and supervisor with over ten years experience working with adults and young people. She has worked for a number of high profile organisations including Childline, Mind, The YMCA and the Terrence Higgins Trust and has run counselling services in sixth form colleges and schools. She  delivers mental health awareness training to organisations across the UK and Wales and teaches emotional literacy and mental health awareness in education and youth organisations and is an approved Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England and Wales instructor.
