Knowing whether you are saying the right thing to someone in need is something we encounter often as professionals. At times we worry that we might make things worse.

 

This experiential workshop, written and delivered by an accredited psychotherapist with over ten years' experience counselling young people teaches basic counselling and listening skills that will help you feel more confident in supporting others.​ The workshop includes:
 

  • Issues that young people face including self-harm, depression and suicidal thoughts

  • Basic counselling skills to help people open up

  • Active listening, reflecting and summarising; how to focus on the central issues

  • The impact of inadequate listening

  • The benefits of empathic listening

  • How to support a young person at risk; what to say and do when a young person may be at risk of harm

  • What to say and do if you feel stuck; techniques to keep an open dialogue

  • How to make an onwards referral

  • Skills Practice

  • Best practice guidelines

By the end of the course you will know the issues that young people are curently facing and how they can impact, be able to use basic counselling and listening skills to confidently respond to a young person that may be disclosing to you, recognise the different types of listening and be able to utilise the most effective approach and know how to make an apropriate onwards referral,



The Facilitators:

Angela McMillan is a British Association for counselling and psychotherapy accredited counsellor (Membership number 031233) and supervisor with over ten years experience working with adults and young people. She has worked for a number of high profile organisations including Childline, Mind, The YMCA and the Terrence Higgins Trust and has run counselling services in sixth form colleges and schools. She  delivers mental health awareness training to organsiations across the UK and Wales and teaches emotional literacy and mental health awareness in education and youth organisations and is a Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor.
