As more people are experiencing mental ill health it is essential that we provide an environment where it is safe to talk about mental health and to understand how early intervention can help with recovery. This course will give you the skills, confidence and knowledge to support a person who is experiencing mental health issues.

The course covers:

  • What is mental health?

  • Issues that students face

  • Depression and Anxiety

  • Suicide and Psychosis

  • Self-harm and Eating Disorders

  • Substance Misuse

Research and evaluation shows that taking part in an MHFA course:

  • Raises awareness and mental health literacy

  • Reduces stigma around mental ill health

  • Boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues

  • Promotes early intervention which enables recovery

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health issue

  • Feel confident in offering initial help

  • Preserve Life

  • Promote recovery of good mental health

  • Offer signposting to support services

  • Understand stigma related to mental health

  • Develop an understanding of how to create and maintain a mentally healthy HE community

This course has been researched and evaluated for its effectiveness by the University of Chester.

The Facilitator:

Angela McMillan is a British Association for counselling and psychotherapy accredited counsellor (Membership number 031233) and supervisor with over ten years experience working with adults and young people. She has worked for a number of high profile organisations including Childline, Mind, The YMCA and the Terrence Higgins Trust and has run counselling services in sixth form colleges and schools. She  delivers mental health awareness training to organisations across the UK and Wales and teaches emotional literacy and mental health awareness in education and youth organisations. She is a Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor, Youth Mental Health First Aid (Wales) instructor and associate trainer for MHFA England.
